The World Cup 2010
The history of the world cup is steeped in tradition and controversy it is without doubt the biggest sporting spectacle in the world.
The tournament started in 1930 with the finals being played in Uruguay, since then weve seen great spectacles played in Mexico,Italy,France,Brazil,England and many other countries.France, Mexico and Italy have hosted the finals twice.
This years event will be held in South Africa for the first time and the event will be one of the biggest in sporting history in this country.
Spain are predicted by most to be the favs after their recent European championship win, however the competition looks wide open and we may even geta major shock with one of the leser known countries coming out winners.
Recent winners include Italy,Brazil,France,Germany and Argentina.Traditionally the big nations come out on top so it would be nice to see one of the underdogs come out winners in South Africa
Coverage for the game will be worldwide and record viewing figures are expected, every game can be watched online for free at http://www.thaivisanews.com/
Here are some snapshots of historic moments in the competition
The 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany was number 18 in the history of the FIFA World Cup. Germany last held the World Cup in 1974. Italy defeated France 5–3 in a thrilling penalty shootout in the final, after full time and extra time had finished 1–1. It was the first time Italy won a World Cup match on penalties after three failed attempts.
Zinedine Zidane became the fourth player in World Cup history to score in two different finals, along with Pel้, Paul Breitner and Vavแ, in addition to being tied for first place with Vavแ, Pel้ and Geoff Hurst with three World Cup final goals. In the final against Italy he was sent off in the 110th minute for headbutting Marco Materazzi. Despite the red card and the controversy that followed, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the competition.
Host nation Germany defeated Portugal 3–1 to finish third. The 2006 World Cup was also one of the most watched event in television history.
Korea and Japan 2002
For the very first time the World-Cup went in Asia. And for the very first time it was split between two nations, Japan and South-Korea. Argentina was the big favourite, followed by the title holders France, and as always Brazil. But this turned up to be the World-Cup were the favourites failed. Both France and Argentina failed to qualify through the first rounds. And an incredible comeback of Ronaldo helped Brazil to the final. In the final Brazil faced Germany and won 2-0 after two goals by Ronaldo.
France 1998
France is one of football world powers even though their national league is rather poor. FIFA was created in an alley in Paris in 1904, UEFA was created by Frenchmen. Because of that France was chosen as World-Cup hosts. This World-Cup should be the big breakthrough for the French playmaker Zinedine Zidane. Norway shocked the world by beating Brazil in the first round. Even though Brazil passed through and made it to the final. They faced a strong French side and lost 3-0 after two goals by Zidane.
United States 1994
In many ways the World-Cup in USA represented something new. For the first time it was hosted in another place than Europe and South-America and also the first time in a country were the interest was rather small. And Norway was qualified for the first time in modern time. Brazil and Italy clashed together in the final. Italy, led by Roberto Baggio struggled through after beating Bulgaria in the semi finals. Brazil, led by striker Romario sent Sweden out in the semi. For the first time the final ended 0-0, and a penalty shootout had to decide a winner. Brazil won for the fourth time.
So who will be making history on this occasion and which players will produce the goods or make a terible error to decide a game ? The build up continues to the worlds biggest sporting event and regular updates can be found at http://www.thaivisanews.com/

The Summons of the Lord of Hosts $12.48 In these magnificent documents written between 1868 and 1870, Baha'u'llah, the Prophet and Founder of the Baha'i Faith, invites the monarchs and religious leaders of His time to accept the basic tenets of His Faith; sets forth the nature of His mission; and establishes the standard of justice to which those entrusted with civil authority should adhere. Among the leaders specifically addressed by Baha'u'llah were Napoleon III, Czar Alexander II, Queen Victoria, Nasiri'd-Din Shah, and Pope Pius IX. The Summons of the Lord of Hosts is an invaluable resource for those interested in the scripture and history of the world's great religions. |

Parasitic Birds and Their Hosts $221.98 This book is the first to present a comprehensive overview of parasitic birds and their hosts. Although the phenomenon has attracted the interest of naturalists and evolutionists since Darwin, only recently have researchers applied modern evolutionary theory and experimental methods to study the various adaptations related to brood parasitism. The work in this field is accelerating rapidly, and this volume collects work from the individuals and research groups around the world who have been responsible for nearly every major study in the last ten years. The papers present valuable summaries along with substantial new research, and the volume concludes with a review of important unsolved questions. The book is an invaluable resource on this fascinating topic, covering the remarkable sequences of adaptations and counter-adaptations, along with the perhaps even more remarkable cases where adaptations seem to be lacking. |
