What Would Jesus Do With A 9mm Glock?
As legislators struggle with the effectiveness and human dignity issues surrounding lifetime sex offender registries that, under the Adam Walsh Act, would run the gamut of 189 categories from pedophilia to urinating on the sidewalk, there emerges a contingent of leaders pushing for harsher distinctions.
In a word, these leaders seem to love registries that not only make permanent the exile status of offenders of many types but remove whole families from the forgiveness loop.
What List Are You On?:
Several weeks ago, I published an article, "What List Are You On?" With tongue in cheek, I referenced the 800,000 or more nationwide who are presently on the sex registry. I poked fun at a bill before the Maine legislature, LD 760, "An Act to Establish an Animal Abuser Registry."
I suggested that if these registries continue to develop and grow, they will serve 2 purposes - to give those on registries political voice and to give those of us not on registries a feeling of moral superiority masked as public safety. One consideration might be to merge the registries and create a PAC.
Drunk Driver Offender List:
Along comes the latest list - a website that would permit Mainers to see if any of their neighbors were convicted drunken drivers. It would include names, addresses and pictures.
This is the brainchild of Rep. Richard Cebra (R-Naples), whose bills this session have included an act to allow concealed weapons in the State House, an act to nullify Federal laws (states' rights advocacy) and an act to require people who register to vote to provide proof of citizenship, a takeoff from the "birther" movement.
Mal Leary of Capital News Service quoted Cebra as saying, "People need to know about drunk drivers that might be living next door and taking their kids to soccer practice." Whether you are left wing or right wing, it seems always to be about the safety of latchkey kids.
Religious Twist:
I served with Rich on the Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. I wondered what happened to him that he suddenly wants to make lists and bring a gun to the State House presumably to shoot sex offenders, animal abusers, respectable drunks and liberals with or without full citizenship. It struck me that there might be a religious twist in there somewhere.
A quick Googling of Rep. Cebra, and I found that he is a member of the Windham Assembly of God, although his religion is listed as "Lake Region Vineyard Church." On the surface, there didn't seem to be much of interest there.
Further digging, however, uncovered what appears to be a startup Vineyard church in Naples, affiliated with the Vineyard USA denomination. Taking a look at the beliefs of Vineyard USA uncovered some interesting information.
"Culturally Relevant Mission":
Prominent is the statement of their "culturally relevant mission." It describes an on-going dialogue that determines whether they are going to be a "…small set of backwater, culturally-irrelevant churches or a community of churches that really do make a difference in the world."
As pastor of one of those backwater, culturally-irrelevant churches, it occurred to me that I may, like Jesus, be a candidate for another one of those special lists of marginal people.
What I found next was much more interesting, however:
"We lean toward the lost, the poor, the outcast, and the outsider with the compassion of Jesus, knowing we are sinners whose standing before God is utterly dependent on his mercy. This mercy can only be truly received inasmuch as we are willing to give it away…We believe that ministry in Jesus' name should be expressed in concrete ways through the local church. The poor are to be served as though we serve Jesus himself. This is one of the distinguishing characteristics of a church expressing the love of Christ in a local community."
I got it! In order to minister to the poor, the outcast and the outsider, you have to be able to find them! What better way than with a list or an obituary that identifies the loved ones of those shot in the lobby of the State House?
If only Jesus had had a 9mm Glock!

Thai Hard: With a Vengeance
Tubby Brazilian Ronaldo may be one of the greatest players to ever grace a football pitch, but he’s definitely a poor role model. The AC Milan man let himself down when he invited three members of the late-night entertainment industry back to a motel. It wasn’t just the fact that they turned out to be ladyboys; he shamefully offered to pay them for doing nothing. If I pay a builder to construct a conservatory, and he brings along a few superfluous tools, I’d expect him to keep his head down and finish the job.
This sorry tale was not the only case of mistaken identity this week; Rio Ferdinand kicked a female Chelsea steward after mistaking her for a wall. It sounds like a tall story, but I once kicked the wife by accident; I thought she was her mother.
This is Rio’s first high profile gaffe since that moment of madness a few years ago, when he dated Emma Bunton. I will definitely be dipping in to the 7/1 for a draw between Manchester United and West Ham.
Rio wasn’t the only player involved in controversy at Stamford Bridge last week; Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba almost came to blows over a free kick; they should really have got a room with Ronaldo. I can’t get my head around the 11/2 for a Newcastle win over Chelsea.
The funniest moment of the match came after the final whistle, when the Manchester United players had a Benny Hill style fight with the Chelsea groundsmen. Robbie Savage could definitely forge a career in the female impersonation industry once his best footballing days are behind him; somewhere in 1998. Blackburn are a far better team since they dropped the blonde deadwood; they’ll beat Derby by two or more goals at 5/6.
If Reading v Tottenham produces as much action as the reverse fixture, it’ll be quite an entertaining game. Tottenham romped to a 6-4 victory at the Lane; narrowly foiling my bet on ‘no goalscorer’. Reading have deteriorated since then; they haven’t scored a goal since March and only Derby have a worse goal difference. If Tottenham don’t take all three points at 12/5, I’ll be more hurt than when I woke up in Thailand with a worse limp than Heather Mills.
All the warning signs were there with that Thai waitress, she actually warned me that she’d be bringing some nuts up to the room. I thought she meant that I’d enjoy a late night snack - unfortunately, I was correct. I’m definitely right in taking a large slice of the 8/11 for an Arsenal win over Everton.
I’m reminded of my Thai nightmare whenever I see Roy Keane’s infamous challenge on Alf-Inge Haaland; that was some tackle. Roy’s boys have been priced up at 11/2 against Bolton, that’s very, very big.
It was quite ironic that I ended up in a compromising position with a male who looked like a female, as my wife could easily pass for a builder. Aston Villa, Blackburn, Tottenham and Arsenal form a 10/1 accer of which there can be absolutely no ambiguity.

Sport betting terminology: 101
Sports betting have increased in recognition and are attracting a lot of people to take part of it. Some of these new aficionados have little or no knowledge at all the jargons that are commonly used in this business. In order to better understand how it works, it is best for those who are new to this to know the basic sport betting terminology that is commonly used in this type of gambling.
There are frequently used sport betting terminologies used in the trade. For a novice, the first term that must be learned is "action". Action, in sport betting jargon, is simply the act of taking part in the activity. By saying, "I want to take part in the action" signifies the willingness to participate in the betting.
"Sportsbook" is the establishment that takes bets for sports betting, or most generally known as a book. The person taking in the bets is known as the "bookie."
Another term to remember is "handicap". This simply means to grant one team a point or points-advantage with the intention of leveling the gambling field. For example, in a game where Team A is a stronger opposition than Team B, the odds for winning a bet on Team B is given a +3 handicap since Team A is a much stronger team as compared to Team B. This, in effect, will entice gamblers to place a bet on the losing team .If at the end of the game the score is 10-8 in favor of Team A, Team B wins in the betting because their final score is given a +3 handicap, making the score 10-11, in favor of Team B.
"Handle" is one common term used in the trade. It means the total money wagered on bets. "Juice" is the portion of all the bets withheld by the bookmaker as his proceeds. It is synonymous to the word "vig" or vigorish. In most cases, the bookie takes a fixed fraction of the handle, but more frequently it is already added within the odds.
"The spread" is commonly used in sporting events such as basketball which produce high point scores. It is essentially a handicap utilized to make a match evened-out in order to allow bettors to bet on the underdog. The spread grants one team a lead of a small number of points. In a spread type of betting, the advantaged team is indicated first, preceded by a negative figure which indicates the spread in effect. In addition, team playing in its home court is written in bold letters. To better illustrate the spread, we shall use this example. Team A is the advantaged team, and team B is the underdog. The spread for this match will appear to be like this: Team A -10; TEAM B. In this example, Team A must win by 10 points in order for those who bet on Team A to win.
And finally the sport betting terminology which every greenhorn should learn is, "money line". For sporting events such as soccer, the point-difference is not wide enough to employ the point spread so money line is utilized in its place. If one wants to wager on the crowd favorite, say Team A, then one has to wager $5.50 for every $5 one wants to win. And if one chooses to wager on the less favored Team B, one has to bet $5 for every $5.50 one wishes to win.
