Africa Cup Of Nations - Much Awaited Tournament in 2012 January
The African Nations Cup is the major global football competition held in Africa. The authority who conducts and organizes the event is the Confederation of African Football. The event is held for once in two years and it was last held in 2010. The 2010 match was also called as the Orange Africa Cup of Nations. It was the 27th African cup since its inception in 1957. The match was held in Angola and it was commenced on 10th January 2010 and concluded on 31st January. Like each year, 15 nations participated in the event and Egypt won the tournament consecutively for 3 years.
Egypt was chased by Ghana and finally they won the competition by beating the opponent in the score rate of 1-0 in the finals. The selection for qualification of the team begins at the end of the previous year's event and for 2010 game the process of selection commenced in 2007 October in which 53 African teams participated. Togo was withdrawn from the list since the team was attacked by the group of terrorist when they were arriving to attend the tournament.
Initially when the Nations Cup was started there were only 3 nations to participate in it, namely Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. The policies of the Government of South Africa stood against holding discrimination views and prevented it in participating on the tournament. It is necessary for a nation to qualify for taking part in the event of Nations Cup.
Gradually number of participating countries increased and finally it reached 15 in the year 1998 and from then onwards the same figure is maintained till now. The total number of teams was grouped into 4 teams and the topper in the two teams would advance to the Finals of the Nations Cup. The Egypt holds a standard record of winning the cup for the last three times successively and since the date of organization of the event, Egypt has won the tournament a whooping 7 times. The nations of Ghana and Cameroon have taken the title four times so far.
Since 2008, the schedule of the Africa Cup of Nations was supposed to be changed since the players would be missing several matches if the tournament was held during the European season. There was also another announcement for raising the spirit of the fans of football. In future the event of Nations cup will be played in the year of odd number, such that it does not interfere with the World Cup tournament. The next event is scheduled in January 2012 at Gabon and again another event will be held in January 2013 in Libya.
